Live Journal Bans Breastfeeding Icons

If you'd like to show your support please feel free to download and upload this icon that was designed by Benson3, or better yet, upload photos of yourself breastfeeding. Sadly my breastfeeding days are about thirteen years behind me now, but I care very much about issues that affect the rights of breastfeeding mothers and their babies.

I just read that Live Journal does not allow us to use images of women breast feeding for our default icons. Women's breasts are not okay, men's breasts are. So essentially we can upload all the photos of men breastfeeding that we like, but none of women. I didn't even know there was any kind of censorship where our icons are concerned until I stumbled across this on my friend Ana's journal tonight. Apparently this was all started by an angry troll who had been asked to remove his naked Bea Arthur icon and decided to target the Boob Nazi community because he figured they'd mobilize. He was right. Nevertheless, the match has been struck, and big mistakes were made on the part of Live Journal/Six Apart.

I have seen some of the most graphic, sexually explicit icons here through the years. How can they possibly deem breast feeding offensive? BREAST FEEDING??? As a woman, a mother who breastfed her son for years, despite everything I had to go through in order to be able to do this, (Beau was born seven weeks early, my nipples are large and his mouth was small, I was depressed, overwhelmed, sleep deprived, my boobs leaked, my back hurt, and it was all worth it), I am simply horrified! How dare they?

Six years of extreme loyalty to Live Journal and this is how they treat us. Something had better change and change fast. This TOS ruling cannot be allowed to stand.

I've been up for hours looking into this and even though I'm coming late to the debate, I think the best thing we can do at this point is to write letters of protest to The Live Journal Abuse Team, to Six Apart, and contact as many pro-breastfeeding advocacy groups as possible. This instant letter of protest that ProMom has put together is a great place to start. Money talks my friends and the only way we're going to get an apology and a policy change is to create some pressure of the financial kind. I can't imagine that Live Journal, who I have loved and stood so loyally by, for so very long now, will be able to withstand the shitstorm that this kind of negative publicity will bring their way.

If you want to send a note of support to the first Mom to be targetted you can go to Cali4niachef's Journal and leave a wee bit of support for her hurting feelings there.

If you want to read more about all of this you can go to the wonderful Boob Nazi's Live Journal Community and track back through the whole thing there. I'm off to write a bunch of flaming hot e-mails.

Oh WoMan am I pissed off right now!
