| Bio: | Recent Updates![]() My Friend Tuatha Made Me Do This ; ) 12-06 Wow, it's been awhile. I so owe you an update. Oh well, come check out my journal, that'll be the best way for you to get to know me : ) 8-05 It's been a year since I first started adding updates to my info page. Time moves so quickly for me, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that an entire year has rolled around and here we are again, getting ready to go to Burning Man. We're so excited! The Woman's Day Gardening and Deck Design magazine that we have a six page article in, is out and will be on the stands until mid-September. I haven't even seen it yet. There are some super important adoption related issues that I'd love to share with you, but there are other people involved, so this is about all I can say about that. We just had a mini preview fashion show of my Mother's and Grandmother's dresses, sponsored by American Cinematheque, The Art Deco Society LA, and the Los Angeles Conservancy, before a screening of Breakfast at Tiffany's, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. It was wonderful. The real fashion show is scheduled for November 6. My boyfriend Scott's new CD is finally completed and available for sale. He just had his CD release party at a place called The Pub in Pasadena. I sang backing vocals on it. Beau is growing up. He's fifteen now, taller than anyone we know, and is about to start high school in the fall. He has a girlfriend and he can drive. He went to a rock and roll band camp in San Diego this summer, formed a band, played bass, wrote an original song, made a MTV style video, and recorded his song. Our many animals friends are doing well, I'm not taking any more in and we're always looking for good homes for cats, dogs, rabbits, and rats. Let me know if you know of anyone super loving who has room in their hearts for a companion animal. Pretty much everything else is bound to be covered somewhere on this page, or in my journal. Thanks for coming by : ) 2-05 Well, Happy Valentine's Day Everyone. Things are moving along here pretty quickly as always. I just finished singing the background vocals for Scott's new album/cd and I'm feeling pretty excited and happy about this. The Art Deco Society fashion show of my Grandmother's, (Peggy Hunt) and my Mother's, (Jeannette Alexander) dresses is rolling along. Beau is doing great in school, growing into a man faster than my overprotective Mother's heart can stand, but this is a good thing and I'm prepared for it. Martha Stewart is about done with her jail time. The Tsunami Relief effort is rolling along, I only wish I were free to do more than donate. I wish I could go help out in person but I'm sending my love and prayers. I have a new address, which I've listed below, so please update your address books. Thank you so much for all of the lovely cards and gifts you sent. I so appreciate your kindness and support here, it means the world to me. If I inadvertently forgot to thank you or send a card to you in return, be sure and let me know. Just a reminder that some of my entries are friend's only now. If you would like to add me to your friend's list -- no need to ask, just go ahead and do it. I always consider this an honor, thank you. If you'd like to be added to my overburgeoning friend's list please send me an e-mail, (or two or three -- I'm super distracted and sadly it sometimes takes a bit of effort to get my attention, I'm really sorry about this because I do care and want to be your pal), and I'll come visit your journal. If you're real and kind, I'll more than likely add you back : ) The latest cover story about my home and decorating is finally on the stands. It's a supplemental Woman's Day publication called Budget Decorating Ideas, the website is http://www.womansday.com/specials and the number for this one, if you're interested, is VOL. XIV, NO. 4, 2004. I can't find any info on their site yet but that might be because it's just too early and we may need to keep checking back. I'll scan the article and put that up for you soon. It turned out pretty well, a nice eight page spread with a lot of puff piece writing about my acting and life. In the meantime here is a link to the pictures and story of the shoot we did at our house. 12-30-04 Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year Everyone! ![]() This is one of my 2004 Holiday Cards. There are a total of five in the series. If you are interested in participating in my annual Christmas/Holiday/New Year's collage card trade, please send a card to me at the following address, be sure to include your Live Journal name, and I'll be happy to send you one in return : ) Well, providing I haven't run out of them... Jacqui Hyland 149 South Barrington Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90049 Here is one more of the set of cards. You can see all five of them, as well as the two from last year, in a bigger format on my journal. If you go to my calendar I think I put them up around the 23 or 24 of December. ![]() My little boy has turned into a giant, fourteen-year-old-almost-man person. These are the first shots he took of himself with my webcam. Since I hardly ever use it, he went ahead and "borrowed" it. 10-04 We're busy getting ready for our annual Halloween yard haunt madness. A documentary television crew is coming to tape the whole thing. I'll let you know when I know more about this and will of course post pictures of all the kids and fun. Here is a link to some of the many pictures I took of our Halloween fun. ![]() My 2004 Black Rock City Trading Card 08-04 We're off for Burning Man after a two year hiatus. Our rented motor home is jammed full of costumes, props, bicycles, glow sticks, water, electronic gear and toys. We are both so excited. We'll let you know all about our adventures as soon as we can get Internet access. We just finished shooting the cover story for a design supplement issue of Woman's Day magazine that will come out in two parts. The interior photographs and article will be in their Budget Decor magazine and hit the stands in January of 2005, and the garden part of the story will come out next Summer, so probably July of 2005, in their gardening and Deck Design magazine. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. I've been working for/with Kitty Bartholomew as a stylist/assistant and am learning so much. I'll have a credit in her new book that's coming out this fall. She is a real sweetheart and a serious Energizer Bunny of a gal. You should try her mulberry jam and her peanut butter fudge, oh Lordy, and her dog Spot is pretty darned wonderful too : ) The Discovery Channel has asked me if I would like to tell my weight loss story on an episode of Taking Off and I have tentatively agreed. I'm not sure when this will tape since they keep postponing it but they may help defray the costs of the reconstructive cosmetic surgery I am needing. There is more information about my bariatric surgery and weight loss further down on this page. The two episodes of HGTV's Country Style that we shot here in our home are still running occasionally on HGTV. We had a lot of fun working with the crew, the producers and writers. They interviewed Beau, Irma, her kids and me and showed different shots of our home. I'm looking forward to being the commentator at a fashion show that the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles is sponsoring that will feature about a hundred of the best dresses from my collection of my Mother's and Grandmother's dresses. We were hoping to put it together in 2004 but the woman who coordinates everything had a serious family crisis and this will likely push it back to spring of 2005 : ( My Mom, (Jeannette Alexander,) and my Granny, (Peggy Hunt,) were prominent California fashion designers and inovators. I collect their dresses whenever I can find and afford to buy them. The fashion show will be held at the El Rey theatre, a wonderful restored landmark here in LA. I have my friend Mary to thank for this. ![]() Our home was featured in the April/May issue of Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion Magazine. It took two years to shoot our home and garden so I can't help but brag about it, ten pages, come and check it out. ![]() My friend Jen did this amazing watercolor of me, as she sees me. Maybe someday, cross your fingers for me. ![]() Here I am in bed at the W hotel in Westwood on Christmas night looking as exhausted as I was. ![]() This is a shot of me sitting on the floor by the door, passing out candy on Halloween in my Little Red Riding Hood costume. I recently went blonde. Every once in a while I succumb to the, "You should really dye your hair blonde," pressure from friends and family, but I know I'll dye it back, I always do. I think dark brown, or blue-green, or fuschia or cotton candy pink, is much more fun . ![]() Here I am with my beloved 14 year old sweetheart, Beau, during our trip to New York this summer. We had such a good time and are big New York fans. I wish we could live there, maybe someday. ![]() This is a picture from the photo shoot for the Woman's Day magazine article that will be on the stands in December. ![]() I love Anna May Wong, well, I pretty much love anything Asian. My dream is to be able to adopt a little girl from China someday, but my Mother, who adopted me, is opposed to my adopting someone who doesn't look like me, I couldn't care less about this, but I don't want to upset my Mom, so I'm going to wait, a bit. Well, let's see, where to start? I'm female, I'm adopted, I'm an Aries, born in the Year of the Tiger. I'm multitalented, I write, I act, I sing, I create art, especially collage and assemblage. I'm loyal, loving, funny, friendly, and super emotional, but not as much as I once was, antidepressants have taken care of this for me. I pretty much tell it like it is in this journal, all of it, so be prepared for some pretty intimate details. Oh and I swear, a lot, I'm working on it. I survived a super painful breakup of a long term relationship/marriage, where my ex ran off with a Las Vegas stripper, and forgetting to divorce me first, married her in a quickie Vegas wedding-chapel wedding. I was pretty devastated but I'm doing so well now that I wanted to help other people in similar circumstances so I created a community here on Live Journal, Broken Hearts for people who need to have a place where they can commiserate with other like-minded heartbroken souls. The latest community I've created here in Live Journal land is a tape or DVD/CD trade community where hopefully people will be able to go and exchange favorite recorded television or cable programs. It's brand new so it hasn't really taken off yet but you can find it here; Did You Tape That? I have recently been creating and exchanging little hand made artists trading cards with other artists and have been having a blast doing this. I was also invited to created the nine of spades for a deck of cards that is being published and sold commercially. It was featured in an article in Somerset Studios, and my card was in the center of the cover picture of the article, yeay! ![]() I got to meet and hug Carnie Wilson and she was an absolute doll. She is such a big love bug and so under the microscope re. her weight gains and losses. I love how open and generous she has been in sharing her entire life throughout this process with all of us. I wish everyone would get off her back for every little thing she does. It must be really hard being scrutinized like this, having people hunt you down looking for bad pictures to put in scuzzy tabloid magazines. Having struggled with weight and eating disorder issues for most of my adult life, and with nothing but love and respect for my fellow lush sized brothers and sisters, I decided that with all my health problems that were suddenly cropping up, I had to do something about it and soon, so I had gastric bypass surgery in March of 2003 and lost 135 pounds. Roux en Y, performed laparascopically by Dr. Carson Liu at Century City Hospital. It's the same surgery that Carney Wilson, Al Roker, and pretty much ninety percent of all of the large sized people on the planet with good insurance have had. I've stopped losing weight and I'm worried I'll slowly inch my way back up to where I once was, this is my nightmare. ![]() Now for those few misinformed souls, (and please don't take this personally because I'm not talking about you -- I like you), who think this is a rich person's walk-in-the-park-alternative to losing weight the hard way, I'd like to ask you to please think again. Most insurance companies cover this surgery and even if they say no, you can always fight them. As far as it being easy, you still have to face the fear of having major surgery, then recover from that surgery, and know that you will never be eating the same way again. After surgery you have fairly strict food guidelines that you will have to follow for the rest of your life and you have to exercise regularly or you're going to be a major flab-monster. Then because there is only so much you can do with exercise, there's reconstructive cosmetic surgery to look forward to. I've already had a consultation with Sharon Osbourne's, (love her!!!), amazing plastic surgeon and will be getting the works when I save up the money and find the courage to do it. I guess I'm just a wee bit defensive about all of this because Oprah, who I think is one of the coolest beings on the planet, doesn't seem to be the biggest fan of this surgery. Who knows, maybe I'm misinformed. But I do believe this process is every bit as tough as doing it without the surgery; you still have to face your demons, you still have to limit what you eat and get out there and move, and you have to change your lifestyle permanently or you just may find yourself back where you started, a fat princess after the ball is over, kind of like Cinderella. I was on a waiting list for one year and a half for this suddenly super popular surgery and finally had it on Monday, March 24, 2003. So far I'm doing really well and am hopeful. If anyone wants to talk to me about this feel free to write or come by the Weight Loss Surgery Community journal here on LJ. I have a wonderful man/companion/partner in my life. He's a singer songwriter and an artist like me. He's my smart sexy boyfriend Scott, Songmon here on Live Journal and I love him very much. I am the Mother of an amazing genius being of a child, (Beau, he's thirteen), who I worship and adore. (I'm a MOM what do you expect?) I live in LA and my house is a zoo. We have more animal-friends than I can safely disclose; cats, dogs, ferrets, rats, (tame and wild, well, they're eating the stuff in my garage so I might as well count them too), rabbits, a chinchilla, two Leopard Geckos and one Siamese Fighting Fish. Most of our cats are either naked or have curly hair. Jake is my favorite and the one who sleeps on my head most nights. He's a mostly blind Devon Rex who we have been fantasizing about making a little mini pirate costume for. Scott wrote a little song for him so all we really need is a miniature parrot and an eye patch. Then there's Niki, Buki, (for Charles Bukowski), Luna, Miss Mina, Baby Angel, Cio Cio, Leon, Mini Leon, Harry, Lucilla, Mouse, Leelu, Summer, Bluebell, Spooky1 and Spooky2, Curly, Curly Girl, Mo1 and Mo2, B, BB, BBB, Oliver, Lili'i, Tea Tea, Zazu Pitts, and... The dogs are; Jack, a big, friendly, shepherd/wolfy mix who I found at the shelter and just couldn't leave behind, Alley, (Beau named her), a Papillon, Lu Lu, a Boston Terrier, the-dog-with-no-name-because-I-hate-the-one-Beau-wants-to-give-her, (Scrappers, yuck), a Jack Russel Terrier, our newest addition, and Puppy, a Pit Bull-Dalmatian mix, who we found starved, and sickly, covered with ticks and mange, running in and out of heavy traffic on Sunset, and heading towards the 405 freeway. I would love to find a great home for her with someone who can give her the kind of attention and serious exercise that she needs but pit bull lovers are hard to find. I'm an actor and I direct and produce wacky little videos and documentaries and I hope to be a working film maker someday. I'm already a working actor. I am deeply gifted creatively (I write, I sing, and I create art, I'm pretty handy with anything creative), and am thankful for these gifts, I know that it is my job to make the most of them and get out there and share them with you. I know it's pretty cliche for a gal from Los Angeles to want to act and direct, but I've been doing this my whole life, it's just who I am, no matter how many times I've tried to quit or do something else I always come back to it, nothing seems to dissuade me. Theatre, acting, and film, have always been the biggest loves of my life. I have huge goals for myself and am usually pretty busy and distracted by things, but I'm also incredibly loyal, generous, and friendly, and try to be a good human and a pal. Spiritually I was raised Catholic but lean a little to the East and am a devoted animal right's activist and vegetarian. Despite my Buddhist leanings I still run to Mass at the first sign of trouble and will remain devoted to the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Mary, my beloved teachers and friends, until the day I die and beyond. It didn't really surprise me too much when they bought a house four doors away from me and moved in. I think it was meant to be. I went to Sunshine preschool, Marymount Junior and High School, (the best Catholic schools on the planet), and UCLA, where I majored in theatre from the first semester of my freshman year. I also studied theatre at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, back when Lee was alive and would come and look in on our classes and with members of The Actor's Studio and the Actor's Gang, (we all started out together at UCLA), and in England. I'm obsessed with the ocean, with water, and with scuba diving. About four years ago I finally accomplished a life long goal and not only got my open water certification but my advanced open water certification as well. I've been diving in Hawaii, Tahiti, Mexico, Catalina, and along the coast of California. My favorite things to see underwater are any kind of rays, jellyfish, and nudibranchs. I'm not afraid of sharks or eels and I like to go super slow and get really macro. I'm hoping that finally shedding this excess weight will make it easier for me to get back out where I belong, which is always in the water. I joined Live Journal several years ago. I'm an early adopter and have permanent status thanks to my friend Howie F. It's a big part of my life; being able to come here and write in my journal and share it publicly has been profoundly healing for me. It's a creative outlet as well as being a place where I've finally found community and a sense of place. I've always been kind of wacky and different, an iconoclast who never fit in anywhere other than theatre, until I found Burning Man, here's a fun picture of us, but that's a whole other story. I feel accepted for myself here, and I've met some incredibly decent people and made so many friends. A couple of warnings should you wish to add me to your friend's list here, I tend to write long rambling entries and do not take advantage of the Live Journal cut feature. Please don't chide me for this as I feel it is my right, in my own journal, to express myself the same way that I would in a paper journal. I will try to keep my photographs reasonably small but do occasionally post something that is a bit wider. Rather than complain to me about the look of your Friends Page, you can easily remove me and then add me back later, if you like. I don't censor anyone else's journals, writings, art, or photographic materials and do not want to be forced to censor my own in order to fit someone's style dictates. Regarding risque photographs and the viewing of these types of things in a work environment please see below. ![]() MY DISCLAIMER; If you can handle this photo, then you can pretty much handle anything in this journal. But if this offends you rather than makes you laugh, beware and turn back now. I must warn you though, if you don't like frank open talk about sexuality or the body, or the occasional vintage nude erotic photo from turn of the century France, then this might not be the journal for you. However if you don't mind swearing, occasional nudity, and having skin-cats jump all over you, then this might just be the place you've been looking for. Thanks so much for coming by and big loving hugs from me to you -- Jacqui ![]() Every month I make a new digital birthday card and visit all of my journal pals who have birthdays that month and give it to them. This is the card I made for December's LJ birthday guys and gals.
